A new setting of Philip Paul Bliss's text "Man of Sorrows! What A Name!" that's both contemplative and expansive. Designed for approachability and use in worship services and concerts, the choral writing makes frequent use of two-part textures and unisons while the piano handles the textural and harmonic interest. The last verse is set in a modified version of Bliss's original tune that carries a triumphant message of Christ's victory over death, and climaxes with the first and only statement in the work of "What a Savior!"; the work then ends contemplatively, signifying that while Christ's victory is assured, we are still waiting on earth for His return. An ideal anthem for Lent and Easter Sunday, or for a contemplative concert addition.
